Steve Flammer

Steve Flammer is a local folk musician who plays an interesting instrument, the mountain (or Appalachian) dulcimer. Steve makes this instrument produce lovely tones and soothing, relaxing music. The dulcimer first appeared in the southern Appalachian Mountains populated by transplanted Scots and Irish in he early 1800s, although it had no counterparts in either Scotland or Ireland. It was played in rural home settings by these moutain people. In the 1950s the dulcimer had a revival and eventually became popular in folk music in the 70s and 80s. To play it requires great skill, which Steve demonstrates in each performance. Be sure to take some of Steve’s music in at this year’s Bashful Ostrich!!

Steve also plays both contemporary and music from the British Isles for private occasions

He can be contacted at: sdsf@fuse.net or 513-272-0075.

Queen City Baladeers

Many of our musical acts come from the longest running folk group in the Midwest: the Queen City Balladeers, a non-profit folk music organization. The Queen City Balladeers were established in 1963 by a group of students at the University of Cincinnati, and for over forty years have been sponsoring and promoting folk and acoustic music in the Greater Cincinnati area. It is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, and its membership includes a wide variety of people from all backgrounds and age groups. They perform at the Leo Coffeehouse, also started in 1963. For years it was held in the basement of the University of Cincinnati YMCA. In 2006 Leo’s moved to the Zion United Church of Christ in Norwood, Ohio (corner of Indian Mound and Montgomery Roads). Leo Coffeehouse is run entirely by the group’s volunteers, and is held every Sunday evening (7-9 pm) from September through May. Join them for a wonderful evening of music … and quite a bargain for oly three dollars.

Vedge

A local group of youthful musicians, Vedge plays bluegrass and reggae influenced folk rock with a jam band attitude. Their enthusiasm is contagious: they are incredibly energetic and entertaining. Check them out on their website: www.vedgemusic.com

Papa Joe. http://papajoemusic.com One of the premier folk singers in the Cincinnati area, Papa Joe wrote our theme song, the Bashful Ostrich. His ingenuous talent touches the young and old with songs like I Like Turtles, The Cow Song, Chick Flick (all husbands will love this one), Honey Nut Cheerios, Sunshine Blues, and Dogs is Funny People. Buy his CD; you’ll love it! Papa Joe will perform in the post race party.

In order to provide entertainment throughout this course, several area bands will perform. We hope you like them and, if you need them to perform at a wedding or other occasion, give them a ring.

We will add links to the bands that perform, as well.

Everything Those Three Guys play is a song that passed the ‘oh oh oh’ test.  That means that the last time they heard it on the radio they realized that they just had to play the tune or it was obvious the Universe would come unbalanced.  The Guys play blues, pop,  country, gospel and swing guaranteed to make you feel good and tap your toes.
