Who benefits from funds raised by the Bashful Ostrich 5K?
The Bashful Ostrich 5K supports the following charities, which help some of 350,000 survivors of sexual abuse in the Greater Cincinnati area. Entry fees pay for the expenses of the race and your donations, pledges, and sponsors’ contributions will immensely help these three programs:
FOUNDATION FOR SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ABUSE – This foundation’s primary goal is to raise awareness of the health and social problems caused by sexual abuse and to remove society’s stigma on this issue so that survivors will seek help and avoid the long term consequences of their trauma. This will be done by publicity: by distribution of pamphlets to area high schools and by networking with local and national media. Plans are underway to establish a national awareness day and month in Congress. It also plans to link treatment centers nationally and establish funding for university-based research in this area. Long-range plans include building an area wellness center focusing on programs for the sexually abused. This is an Ohio non-profit foundation. www.stopsexualabusenow.org
AVOICE - The AVoice program serves children who have been sexually abused and their non-offending family members. Highly experienced therapists who undergo special training in child sexual abuse offer help through individual, family and group therapy. In addition, AVoice offers an 18-week program (PACT), which provides specific treatment for victims, siblings and parents. Service is available upon request and is most effective when treatment begins soon after the discovery of abuse occurs. Treatment for child/adolescent sex offenders is also available. Avoice is a division of The Center for Children and Families, with 501(c)(3) certification. www.ccfohio.org/services.htm
CONNECTIONS – This also has 501(c)(3) status and it provides services for female adult and teenaged survivors of sexual abuse in the Cincinnati area. Programs include support groups, drop-in days, workshops on skill building topics, family nights, a newsletter, and a prevention program. Speaker’s bureau is available. www.connectionssp.org
